  • May spend disproportionately more time in trying to sort out even those motivational aspects that are of very minor nature or which in fact are imaginary and not real.
  • May tend to attribute failure of employees as their lack of motivation even when other factors may be primarily responsible for their failures.

Self Motivation

Definitions of Motivation
Following definitions read and interpreted together give us an idea of what motivation is all about:
  • The act or process of motivating.
  • The state of being motivated.
  • Something that motivates; an inducement or incentive.
  • Willingness of action.
  • It is the internal condition of mind and body that activates behavior in a particular direction.
  • It may also be defined as a desire normally driven by need that directs and energizes goal oriented behavior.
  • It is an internal force that actuates thought process, action or reaction and behavioral pattern, positively or negatively.
  • Reason, incentive, enthusiasm, or interest that causes a specific action or certain behavior.
  • Motivation may be rooted in fulfilling the needs.
Definition of Self Motivation
Having understood the meaning of motivation, now we define the self motivation in the following ways:
  • An ability to find a reason and necessary strength to do something and thereby to motivate oneself without the need of any outside influence, incentive, prodding or supervision is called self motivation.
  • It is the urging or inciting of oneself to thinking and action.
  • Initiative to undertake or continue a task or activity by oneself.
  • Self motivation can also be called as internal motivation, the motivation that comes from within as against external motivation where the person looks forward to or waits for the external factors to motivate him.
Types of Motivation: Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation
  • Intrinsic Motivation: When one sees the rewards inherent in the task itself and feels motivated to undertake it and to continue with it, his is intrinsic motivation. He seeks enjoyment and satisfaction in pursuing that task. He does not need any external praise, publicity or rewards to stay motivated. Intrinsic motivation definitely leads to self motivation.
  • Extrinsic Motivation: The motivation comes from outside, it is not from within. Lure of rewards or threat of punishment from outside of the individual i.e. by other people becomes the sole or main motivators. Remove them and the individual is not that much motivated. He misses out on the enjoyment inherent in the task. Extrinsic motivation may or may not always lead to self motivation.
Basic Desires That Largely Guide Intrinsic Motivation and Human Behavior (as per Professor Steven Reiss)
  • Acceptance, the need for approval.
  • Curiosity, the need to think.
  • Eating, the need for food.
  • Family, the need to raise children.
  • Honor, the need to be loyal to the traditional values of one's clan/ethnic group.
  • Idealism, the need for social justice.
  • Independence, the need for individuality.
  • Order, the need for organized, stable, predictable environments.
  • Physical Activity, the need for exercise.
  • Power, the need for influence of will.
  • Romance, the need for sex.
  • Saving, the need to collect.
  • Social Contact, the need for friends (peer relationships).
  • Status, the need for social standing/importance.
  • Tranquility, the need to be safe.
  • Vengeance, the need to strike back.
Motivation and Locus of Control
Locus of control refers to the extent to which individuals believe that they can control events that affect them. Based on this extent, the locus of control is of two types:
  • Internal Locus of Control: Persons with a high internal locus of control believe that events result primarily from their own behavior and actions. They are their sole architects. They think positively about their own efforts and attribute their success to their efforts. They take initiative in seeking related information and knowledge. Persons with high internal locus of control are more self motivated.
  • External Locus of Control: Persons with a high external locus of control believe that the people who are more influential than them or who are in power or fate or luck or chance mainly determine events, particularly the events that affect them. They believe, therefore, that their success is mainly controlled by the factors outside of them. Persons with high external locus of control are less self motivated.
  • Persons with a high internal locus of control have better control over their thinking and actions and can influence other people more than the persons with high external locus of control.
Sphere of Concern or Constraints, Sphere of Self Influence and Self Motivation
  • There are certain things in life over which we have no control or very little control. We will name the domain of such things as sphere of concern or constraints. Yet, there are many other things in life over which we have full control or substantial control. We will name the domain of such things as sphere of self influence.
  • Self motivated people concentrate their efforts in their circle of influence, the things they can shape themselves. They are aware of the outside constraints or concern that lie in the sphere of concern or constraints. However, they do not get disturbed or frustrated by them. They do not complain of those constraints or concerns because they know that it is a futile exercise complaining about them. In any case they do not have control over those factors. So, they better use their energy in doing over which they have some control.
  • As they start putting in their efforts in doing things in their sphere of own influence, they start excelling in some of those areas where they put in their efforts. And these people then get noticed; their all round visibility increases. Due to this, they are given power, authority or control over many of the things that were earlier used to lie in the sphere of constraints and they can now impact also on those things. Thus, their sphere of influence expands and sphere of constraints starts getting reduced. All of this is truer for a self motivated person.
Self Motivated People Get Success by Believing in the Following and Acting Accordingly
  • Have a cause for doing the things that you wish to do.
  • Do things that are closer to your heart, the ones you love to do- things in which you find fun.
  • So, being different does not harm; rather it helps.
  • Frequently do the analysis of your strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis). Develop your self-concept.
  • Then, get on to do your best in the chosen things.
  • Keep sharpening your entrepreneurial skills, required competencies and skills and use them. Be a leader.
  • Dream and think big though you may start small. You have to always take the first step forward when you start on a thousand miles journey.
  • Focus on processes as well as results.
  • Be creative, innovate and improve continuously.
  • Keep learning. Keep learning also from successes and failures.
  • Run your own race.
